Urology cancer support services

Patients who have been diagnosed with urological cancers and undergo surgery or other forms of treatment will receive one-to-one consultation and follow-up care at all stages of their disease from one of our specialist support nurses. Our uro-oncology specialist nurse has all the knowledge, skills and total understanding of patients’ needs while recovering from urological cancer and she or he will attend the first appointment with the urology consultant and be at hand to help from then onwards.  Patients are given the specialist nurses personal contact details and he/she can be contacted at all times to answer any queries or concerns about medical investigations and treatment programmes.

For patients who are diagnosed with bladder cancer, our specialist nurse is responsible for overseeing what is known as intravesical treatment - this includes instilling drugs in the bladder to control the tumour. There are two types of intravesical treatment; immunotherapy treatment – a three treatment plan using a BCG vaccine and chemotherapy which involves using special drugs. Both of these treatments are given to the patient via a catheter into the bladder at a dedicated clinic and patients can go home after the treatment

Once a patient has been through a treatment programme and their urological cancer is stabilised, our nurse will continue to see the patient to provide emotional and psychological support until the patient feels well enough again.
