Trial without catheter clinic

You will have received an appointment letter from the Urology Nurse Specialist asking you to attend the urology clinic department as an outpatient.

The purpose of this appointment is to remove your catheter and see how well you can pass urine.

The catheter will be taken out on your arrival. You need to be prepared to spend most of the morning in clinic (about 3-4 hours) although this depends on how easily you can pass urine.

You will need to drink plenty of fluids whilst you are in the clinic so that your bladder gets used to being full again. If you don’t like water please bring squash or fruit juice. Sometimes constipation can make passing urine more difficult so it may help to have your bowels open the day before the appointment.

If you are able to pass urine successfully you will be able to go home without a catheter. An appointment will then be made for you to see your Urology Consultant.

If however, you are unable to pass urine, a new catheter will be put in and an early outpatient appointment will be arranged for you to be seen by a urology Consultant.   A letter will be sent to inform your GP of the outcome.

Please bring to the clinic a list of medications you are currently taking. This clinic will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your symptoms with the specialist nurse so please feel free to do so.

After the test

Please drink plenty of water to reduce the risk of developing a urine infection.

If you are having problems with your cathertar or having had your catheter removed you are having difficulty passing urine, you will need to contact your GP, District Nurse or go to your local Accident and Emergency department.

If you have any questions about your appointment or anticipate problems attending, you can contact one of the Urology Nurse Specialists on 020 3465 5414 between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.
