For patients | Staying in hospital
Patients who need to stay with us at Barts and The London for urological treatment will probably stay on Bedford Fenwick Ward, based on the second floor of King George V (KGV) Wing at Barts Hospital. If you are staying with us for treatment, we are committed to respecting your privacy and dignity and our ward nurses will be at hand to care for you and make sure you are well again and comfortable with all your treatment before returning home again.

Returning home with a catheter
If you are returning home with a catheter you will be shown everything you need to know to ensure that you can pass urine at home. You will be given a catheter starter pack which includes new bags and all the materials required to keep your catheter working and in good order.
The ward nurse will be happy to answer all your questions and make sure you are feeling confident about returning home with a catheter. You will also be given an information leaflet that may also be useful to refer to. We will organise for a district nurse to come and visit you at home just to make sure that you are okay and coping with your catheter.
Within approximately one to two weeks you will receive an appointment letter from the Urology Nurse Specialist asking you to attend the urology clinic department as an outpatient for a trial without catheter. At this appointment we will remove the catheter to see how well you can pass urine independently. We will measure how much urine you can pass and perform a bladder can to make sure you are emptying your bladder effectively.
