Performance and workload
Barts and The London hospitals produce some of the best clinical outcomes in the UK - evidenced by one of the best survival rate records in the NHS.
Clinical outcomes
- Our success rates for intubating patients (inserting a flexible tube to help patients breathe) before arrival at hospital are the best in the world at more than 99%.
- We submit trauma patient data to the National Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN). TARN collates outcome data from patients in England and Wales. The figures demonstrate that our clinical outcomes for trauma patients are in the top tier.
Patients treated
In 2008, we treated 1448 injured patients - more than any other centre in the UK.
The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) is tasked to over 1800 incidents per year and around a quarter of these patients are subsequently treated at The Royal London Hospital (some patients are taken to other hospitals depending on what is appropriate for their injuries).
Types of injuries during 2008
- 25 per cent were severely injured
- 19 per cent required intensive care treatment
- 26 per cent sustained injury from either a knife or a gun
Blood use
At The Royal London Hospital alone:
- We use an average of 5 units of blood every day for emergency surgery = over 100 litres every year
- More than 150 patients require life-saving blood transfusions every year
For more information about blood use, and to find out about donation, please visit The National Blood Service's website at www.blood.co.uk
Low rates of infection
Barts and The London hospitals continue to have relatively low rates of infection, including rates of the ‘superbug’ MRSA.
