Biography:

1980-1986 Undergraduate training: Cambridge University and St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College. 1989-1996 Dermatology training: St John's Hospital for diseases of the skin, St Thomas' Hospital, London, Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, St Mary's Hospital, London, Royal Bristol Infirmary. 1996 appointed as a consultant at Barts and The London.

Areas of work:

Atopic eczema, ichthyosis, genodermatoses, HIV dermatology, male genital dermatoses.

Research programmes:

Dr Paige has had a lifelong interest (both clinical and research) in genetic skin conditions, especially a rare group of severe skin disorders called the ichthyoses. He has published numerous original scientific articles in this field. In 2006, collaborative work with the academic dermatology department at Barts and The London NHS Trust led to the discovery of the gene responsible for an often lethal skin condition called harlequin ichthyosis and this featured on ITV’s ‘My Skin Could Kill Me’. He is chairman of the charity ‘The Ichthyosis Support Group’ and appeared on their behalf on ITV’s ‘This Morning’ in 2006 in an attempt to raise the profile and funding for this charity. He is also part of the Barts and The London NHS Trust and Queen Mary’s Medical School team researching into the underlying genetic causes of atopic eczema within the Bangladeshi population of East London.

Professional history:

Dr Paige started his dermatology training at St John Hospital for skin disease in Leicester Square before spending two years at Great Ormond Street Hospital for children, carrying out laboratory-based research and clinical paediatric dermatology. Part of his research included laboratory-based spells at Iowa University in the USA and the Scotia research facilities in Nova Scotia, Canada. Further clinical training followed at St Mary’s Hospital London and Bristol Royal Infirmary before being appointed a consultant in 1995 at Barts and The Royal London Hospitals.
