The hospitals

The Barts and The London NHS Trust comprises three hospitals;

• The Royal London Hospital (18 SpRs) Modules for trainees in paediatrics, airway (maxillofacial), plastic surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, neuroanaesthesia, intensive care medicine, obstetrics, vascular and renal access surgery, hepatobiliary & colorectal surgery. Barts and The London Childrens Service (8 SpRs) is the second biggest paediatric unit in London and there are 150 paediatric beds within the Trust and a Paediatric Accident & Emergency Department. Around 3,500 anaesthetics a year are given, of which about one-third are for the under 3-year-olds. There are about 150 neonatal cases a year.
• St Bartholomew’s Hospital (14 SpRs) Modules for trainees in cardiothoracic anaesthesia, intensive care, day care, airway (ENT, maxillofacial), oncological surgery, anaesthesia for radiotherapy and imaging and renal access surgery. The academic department offers a wide range of research and audit projects.
• The London Chest Hospital (7 SpRs) Modules for trainees in adult cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery and thoracic surgery and intensive care. An Acute Myocardial Infarct Centre has recently been opened.

In addition, other Trusts which comprise the BLSA are:

Basildon Hospital Modules in chronic pain, obstetrics, intensive care and general anaesthesia.

Broomfield Hospital Modules incorporate chronic pain management, intensive care medicine, general anaesthetic experience.

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children Specialist paediatric experience which complements well with the more general experience gained at the Barts and The London Childrens Service. 

Queen’s Hospital (Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust) Modules centred on Airway (ENT), neuroanaesthesia (Regional unit for neurosurgery), general anaesthesia.

Homerton University Hospital Modules centred around high risk obstetrics, intensive care medicine, day care anaesthesia, orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology and general surgery. 

Moorfields Hospital Modules in anaesthesia for eye surgery under both LA, GA and sedation with a large paediatric component.

Newham General Hospital A busy District General Hospital covering general anaesthesia with a NHS Treatment Centre attached. 

Southend Hospital Modules offered in paediatric anaesthesia, intensive care medicine, obstetrics and vascular surgery.

St Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns A large paediatric component and considerable use of local/regional anaesthetic techniques.

Whipps Cross University Hospital Modules concentrate on obstetrics, intensive care, general surgery and vascular surgery. Also available are hyperbaric oxygen medicine and chronic pain management.
