Barts and The London Rheumatology Centre has a longstanding commitment to high quality research into the causes and treatment of rheumatic diseases. It has a close working relationship with the Bone and Joint Research Unit at Barts and The London, Queen Mary School of Medicine and Dentistry. This allows scientists and clinical researchers to work in partnership.
Current research programs are focusing on early arthritis, causes of rheumatoid arthritis and related conditions (Professor Pitzalis) as well as novel forms of therapy (Professor Chernajovsky). Research is also looking into the causes and treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (Professor Mageed) as well as mechanisms underlying pain in the rheumatic diseases and assessment of innovative models for treating pain in the community (Professor Kidd).
All members of the department are involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Professor Kidd is Deputy Dean for Education within Barts and The London, Queen Mary School of Medicine and Dentistry and has particular responsibilities for development of the medical curriculum. He is also programme director for the north Thames rheumatology registrar training program.
Professor Pitzalis is Professor of Experimental Rheumatology.
Professor Jawad is Honorary Senior Lecturer and is postgraduate Training Program Director, Deputy Director of Medical and Dental Education, Senior Clinical Examiner of Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and Member of Education Department of RCP.
Dr Pyne is Clinical Supervisor for foundation year doctors. He is certified by the British Medical Acupuncture Society.
Dr Chikanza and Dr Bickerstaff are both Honorary Senior Lecturers.
