The Human Tissue Resource Centre

Barts Health NHS Trust and Queen Mary University of London are committed to supporting The Human Tissue Act 2004 which came into force on 1 September 2006. We are doing this through our Human Tissue Resource Centre. This is a centralised research tissue bank which oversees the collection, storage and use of tissue which has been donated for medical research. This is done in a legal, ethical and safe manner.

About human tissue

The human body is made of collections of cells which make up tissues. The tissue may form organs such as the liver or kidney. Other tissues do not form organs, for example, teeth, bone and blood.

Why human tissue is important

Human tissue is very important to medical research. By studying donated human tissue, doctors and scientists can understand how a disease starts and progresses. They may find different ways of diagnosing and treating a disease or may be able to develop a new treatment.

For more information on the donation and use of tissue for medical research, please download our Tissue Use Information Leaflet below
