Our kidney dialysis service is one of the largest in the UK and the sole provider of dialysis treatment for patients with kidney disease who live in the north east Thames region.

We offer our patients two types of dialysis:

Haemodialysis

Our units are based at the Royal London, Barts, Whipps Cross and Queen’s Hospitals. Each unit operates its own working shift patterns designed to ensure that every patient receives the dialysis at a time convenient to them. There is the morning, afternoon and sometimes the twilight shift. (6pm to 2am). Each of the units is headed up by a dedicated ward manager who ensures that the haemodialysis units run as smoothly and efficiently as possible and, above all, provide the life support treatment for patients referred to us.

Haemodialysis is the most common treatment for kidney failure.  To find out more please visit the Kidney Dialysis Information Centre.

Peritoneal dialysis
Peritoneal dialysis involves the peritoneal membrane surrounding the intestine – this is a natural semi-permeable membrane so dialysis fluid is introduced to the abdominal cavity (surgery to access the cavity will need to take place) and any waste products produced by the body transfer through the peritoneal membrane into the fluid. The abdomen is then drained and the waste removed.  To find out more, please visit the Kidney Dialysis Information Centre.

Our peritoneal dialysis (PD) service is the largest in the country and managed on a ‘named nursing’ basis.  This means that you will have a nurse that is responsible for your complete care. They will be your first port of call to answer any questions and co-ordinate every aspect of your care and treatment.

The named nurse will work with members of the multi professional team to ensure that you receive individual care and attention, comprising:

  • Clinic assessment
This provides care and advice to patients who are either starting PD and require access surgery (surgery to reach the intestine) or are already established on PD.
  • Training and education
Named nurses will teach patients and their relatives how to perform PD and organise follow-up care to ensure that their treatment is progressing well and they are completely happy and comfortable with everything.
  • Support in the community
Following through training and education, our patients are then assessed in their home to review their technique, knowledge and understanding of their PD treatment.  We will also liase with the GP or district nurse to ensure that continuous care is provided in the community.

Our PD team currently cares for approximately 230 patients with kidney failure.
