Barts and The London’s Renal Supportive Care Service was awarded second place in the 2008 British Journal of Renal Medicine Awards in September for their work on “A Patient-Centred Renal Supportive and Palliative Care Service”.

Establishing a truly comprehensive supportive care service for patients with end stage renal failure who opt not to have dialysis is challenging. Consultant Neparologist, Alistair Chesser, together with his colleagues at Barts and The London, have achieved this care service which allows patients who are receiving palliative care to improve their quality and length of care and allow patients to die in their preferred place of care.

Not only was the team awarded second place, but also received £2,000 which they are putting towards developing patient and carer information sheets

Senior Clinical Nurse Specialist Helen Noble said:  “We are very proud of our achievement.  All the team works really hard to improve our patients’ care and quality of life.  It is always nice to receive recognition for the work you do and this is something very special indeed.”

Our dedicated clinic for screening patients with chronic kidney diseases also won a national award from the British Journal of Renal Medicine Award for Innovation, 2007.
