Research to reduce keloid scar disfiguration

Keloid scarringA £500,000 Charity grant is being used by researchers at The Royal London Hospital to carry out the country’s largest study into keloid scarring, a painful and disfiguring condition that affects many people in our local community.

Keloid scars are distinctive in forming large cauliflower-like growths, which are hard to treat and often re-grow even if removed. They are particularly common among those with either fair ‘Celtic’ skin or dark skin, and are especially prevalent in the ethnically diverse population of east London. The specialist keloid clinic at The Royal London Hospital was the first of its kind set up in the UK and is still the largest, seeing around five to 10 new cases each week.

The research team, led by consultant plastic surgeon Mr Simon Myers and Prof Harshad Navsaria, will use the funding to find out more about the origins of keloids and provide better treatments for those affected by them.
