Our performance

Barts and The London hospitals produce some of the best clinical outcomes in the UK - evidenced by one of the best survival rate records in the NHS.

Our three hospitals – St Bartholomew’s (known as Barts) by St Paul’s in the City, The Royal London in Whitechapel and The London Chest in Bethnal Green – have made and continue to make an outstanding contribution to modern medicine.

The hospitals’ full portfolio of specialist centres includes the country’s biggest heart attack centre, leading edge cancer specialties, and one of the UK’s largest children’s hospitals, as well as our highly successful fertility centre.

Home to London’s Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS), Barts and The London is also one of the capital’s leading trauma and emergency care centres, offering surgical expertise that also benefits patients requiring more routine procedures.

Low rates of infection

Barts and The London hospitals continue to have relatively low rates of infection, including rates of the ‘superbug’ MRSA.

Clinical outcomes

Barts and The London Neurostimulator Service was one of the first facilities in the UK to begin using neurostimulation, a technique used to relieve pain and counteract the symptoms of conditions like Parkinson’s disease or epilepsy.

Around 200 patients with epilepsy have now been treated using vagus nerve stimulation, there have been improvements in over 60% of cases.

The use of spinal cord stimulation to counteract pain is also successful at the centre. It has been used in over 300 patients, over 60% reporting significant pain relief where all other approaches have failed.

Note: For all types of stimulation, the chance of benefit varies greatly from case to case, and so a more accurate estimate is given to pateints during individual pre-operative discussions.

Fast access

Access to the weekly assessment and review clinic at The Royal London Hospital can be gained via referral from a GP or specialist.

Number of patients treated

Our busy service normally manages around 400 patient visits every year, and around 50 stimulator operations are performed yearly.
