If you suffer from a neurological condition, and are interested in finding out more about our treatments at Barts and The London Neurostimulator Service, please speak to your GP or hospital doctor. If they feel you are a suitable candidate for the types of treatments offered by the service, they will refer to you us.
Neurostimulation services are highly specialist, and not all patients will be suitable for the treatments. We will ask you to come into hospital for an individual assessment, which may include an MRI scan and EEG video telemetry (where we will monitor your condition through your electrical impulses).
After these tests, if we feel you will benefit from neurostimulation, we will add you to our waiting list for treatment. The treatments are also expensive and your GP or local hospital doctor should confirm whether your local primary care trust will fund your treatment.
Your first appointment at the hospital will be at a clinic where you will be seen by our multidisciplinary team – this may include the consultant clinician, other doctors, specialists and nurses that will be involved in your care. Our multidisciplinary clinics take place each Tuesday, with new patients seen in the morning and follow-up patients seen in the afternoon. You will find the clinic on the 4th floor of the Holland Wing at The Royal London Hospital.
Before coming in for your surgical treatment, you will be asked to attend a preadmission clinic, where you will meet the surgeon and nurses. This clinic is an opportunity for us to check you are prepared for surgery, for us to fully explain the surgical techniques and ongoing care and also for you to ask questions.
We have a range of surgical treatments and information about these can be found in 'our services' section of this website. Your consultant will discuss your treatment with you in detail.
All patients receiving neurostimulation treatment will stay at The Royal London Hospital on our neurosciences ward (called AW4). Our self-contained patient areas (single rooms and four-bedded bays) have single-sex shower rooms and toilet facilities. We have a dedicated 10-bed facility for patients who require continuous monitoring and observation and all our beds are equipped with modern nurse call systems in case of an emergency.

We positively encourage families and friends to visit their loved ones. Visiting hours vary, but all wards are open to visitors between 4pm-8pm.
