Our services | PET CT scanning

A new high-tech scanner costing £2 million is helping to diagnose and treat patients with cancer. Funded by Barts and The London Charity, the scanner is based at Barts hospital and provides high quality images for more effective diagnosis and treatment plans.
The scanner not only shows the precise location of a tumour, it also shows how well tumours are reacting to the early stages of treatment. This can prove invaluable in ensuring the most effective treatment is used.
The purpose-built PET CT Centre is state-of-the-art and will form part of the new cancer centre at Barts – part of the largest redevelopment in NHS history.
Patients will find the whole experience much more comfortable. A newly-installed ambient lighting system provides a welcome distraction to the patient experience as colour and intensity can be adjusted accordingly.
The scanner itself is much more comfortable and less claustrophobic as the main gantry separates out so as not to be fully enclosed.

You will not be able to eat or drink (except water and prescribed medication) for six hours prior to your appointment.
If your blood sugar reading is normal, a small amount of radioactive sugar will be injected and allowed to absorb. This is to show your body’s metabolism or the way it breaks down energy.
You will not be given the results of your scan immediately. The radiologist will examine the scans and send a detailed report through to the doctor who referred you. The results will then be discussed at your next appointment.
