Barts and The London Medical Imaging Centre

Breast screening and symptomatic services

The breast care unit in the West Wing at Barts hospital opened in 2004. The breast care unit provides breast screening to women aged 50-70 and those with symptoms of breast cancer. Women aged 70 are always welcome if they'd like to refer themselves.

We also have numerous mobile units that provide scanning in the City and East London and Camden and Islington areas and static units at Barts hospital, Mile End hospital, Whipps Cross hospital and Kentish Town Health Centre.

We screen nearly 25,000 women every year meaning we are one of the largest units in the country.

We currently have four digital mammography units and three ultrasound scanners.

The specialised x-ray of the breast gives a detailed picture of the breast tissue.

The breast has to be held in a pressed position throughout the procedure to provide the best image possible.

A recent survey carried out in July 2008 by our breast screening service found:

  • 95% of clients felt that the staff were welcoming, friendly, helpful and presentable.
  • Overall, 92% of clients were very satisfied or satisfied with the service they received at the breast screening unit.
