Bringing Excellence to Life

About us

Barts and The London Medical Imaging Centre

About us

Barts and The London Medical Imaging Centre is based at the renowned Royal London Hospital, St Bartholomew’s (Barts) Hospital, and The London Chest Hospital.

Diagnostic imaging services have been established at both The Royal London and St Bartholomew's Hospitals since 1895, making them two of the oldest established radiology facilities in the world.

We provide one of the most comprehensive medical imaging services in the country with all specialities offered across our three sites.

Leading specialists

Our team is highly specialised in every aspect of diagnostic and interventional imaging - from routine x-rays and specialist scans to angioplasties. We work side-by-side with colleagues across Barts and The London’s medical specialties, ensuring that medical imaging and diagnostics is available at all times.

Advanced technology

We provide some of the most advanced technology available. For example, we are the only NHS trust with two 64-slice CT scanners. These scanners produce detailed three dimensional pictures of the any part of the body, including the bones, blood vessels, heart, head and neck, enabling our specialists to diagnose conditions more effectively.

We’ve also just received a £2 million PET CT scanner which provides high quality images for the effective and early diagnosis of tumours and cancers.

The London Chest hospital now houses a new cardiac MRI scanner so cardiac patients no longer have to be transferred to other hospitals.

Picture archiving and communications (PACS)

A new system, installed in November 2006, allows images such as x-rays and scans to be stored electronically and viewed on screens. This means that information can be accessed and compared at the touch of a button.

The system allows information to be shared between hospitals, making the process of diagnosis and reporting much faster. We already have links with some hospitals and this will become more widespread over the next year.

The future

The Medical Imaging Centre will be part of an architechture revolution that started in early 2000 when the Trust was given approval for the largest major hospital building programme in the country.

The Royal London Hospital will be Britain's biggest new hospital, providing clinically renowned general and specialist services to the population of east London and beyond.

The historic buildings of Britain's oldest hospital, Barts, will be refurbished, alongside a major new building, to create a state-of-the-art Cancer and Cardiac Centre of Excellence. The new purpose-built x-ray centre based at Barts Hospital houses state-of-the-art equipment to provide more effective and efficient imaging, procedures and reporting.

The £1 billion investment will mean that some of the country's most deprived communities will have access to leading edge healthcare facilities to rival the best in Europe.

Using research to develop cutting-edge treatments

As a large teaching and specialist hospital we conduct a variety of medical research to ensure that we provide the most advanced and successful services for our patients.
