Barts and The London Maternity Service | Women’s stories | Elizabeth's story
Elizabeth has a complex medical history and highly praises the care she received during her pregnancy at Barts and The London Maternity Service.
Elizabeth has type 1 diabetes, Addisonian Adrenal Failure (an adrenal gland disorder) and autoimmune hypothyroidism, which meant she required close monitoring during her pregnancy and the birth of her baby in 2004.
She says: ‘I am full of praise and thanks for the excellent care I received. The team looking after me were very professional. During my pregnancy, I needed close monitoring to ensure that my complex medical conditions were well controlled in order to ensure good health for me and my baby.’
Elizabeth regularly attended the specialist joint diabetes/endocrine clinic at The Royal London Hospital and was closely monitored by diabetologist Dr David Peterson, obstetrician Mrs Anita Sanghi, midwife Agnes Ong and diabetes specialist nurse Erica Figuera.
‘This one-stop clinic was excellent,’ says Elizabeth. ‘I was able to see different specialists all in one appointment. They reviewed my blood results, medication and weight, monitored my baby’s progress and gave me lots of support and encouragement.’
In July 2004, Elizabeth gave birth to a healthy baby boy at 38 weeks via a caesarean section. She is now pregnant with her second child, due in April 2008, and is again under the care of Barts and The London Maternity Service.
’The care and support I received during my first pregnancy was wonderful, and I am thrilled to be having my second baby here,’ she says. ‘I would like to thank the whole team for their care and support. I feel privileged to be in receipt of such wonderful healthcare.’
