Barts and The London Maternity Service | For women and families | Your pregnancy
Your antenatal (pregnancy) care
At your first pregnancy appointment, which is also known as your ‘booking’ appointment, the midwife will ask you about your obstetric, medical and social history. They will discuss with you the type of care you want during pregnancy and birth. This appointment provides a good opportunity for you to ask any questions. This appointment usually takes an hour.
Your midwife will give you useful information about being pregnant. More detailed information can be obtained from 'The Pregnancy Book’.
Your antenatal care during pregnancy is usually shared between your GP and midwife, but if there are complications you will be referred to one of our specialist services.
The table below outlines your likely schedule of care if you have a straightforward pregnancy. If you have any existing medical problems or develop them in pregnancy you may be seen more often. This will depend on the care that you need.
