London's Air Ambulance
Pre-hospital trauma service
The Royal London Hospital is home to London’s Air Ambulance Service, which has pioneered prehospital care since 1989, taking an experienced trauma doctor and paramedic to the scene of serious incidents in the Greater London area to give patients the best chance of survival.
A HEMS doctor can carry out procedures that normally take place in the hospital, including surgical procedures. The combination of speed of reaching a patient and the ability to deliver intensive care by a trauma doctor within minutes has not only saved lives, but ensured that people return to a normal life, where they otherwise may have risked having a long-term disability. HEMS is largely NHS-funded, but also fundraises as a charity.
