Barts and The London HPB (HepatoPancreaticoBiliary) Centre

Our services

At Barts and The London HPB Centre, we cover all aspects of hepato-pancreatico-biliary (HPB) service provision, apart from liver transplantation. This includes:

Liver resections (including extended resections of up to six liver segments). This term means removing parts of affected liver, whilst ensuring that enough liver remains behind to function normally.

Pancreatectomies (with portal vein resection if necessary). This means removing affected pancreas to remove the cancer. Portal vein resection means removing and reconstructing a major vessel, which if not done may render some of the pancreatectomies impossible. This allows us to achieve a higher rate of surgical removal of tumours.

Chemoembolisation for unresectable hepatomas. This means treating primary liver cancers, which cannot be removed by liver resections, with targeted chemotherapy.

Portal vein embolisation (prior to extended liver resection, to stimulate hypertrophy of the segments that will remain). This technique allows us to carry out a liver resection, where in normal circumstances it would not be feasible.

Radiofrequency ablation of primary and secondary liver lesions. This is an alternative method used for treating liver tumours, which is used sometimes alongside surgery.

Complex laparoscopic procedures (including laparoscopic fenestration of liver cysts, laparoscopic liver resections, and laparoscopic splenectomies). This allows us to use the advantages of key-hole surgery, such as smaller incisions and faster recovery, to complicated liver and pancreatic procedures.

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) and EUS-guided interventions such as tumour biopsies and cyst drainage. This is an additional way to investigate problems and determine and treatment.

Management of viral hepatitis - this is the inflammation of the liver and our service is provided by a team of hepatologists.
