Barts and The London HPB (HepatoPancreaticoBiliary) Centre

Research and academia

Barts and The London HPB Centre has strong research capacity with in-house research as well as links with academic colleagues in various disciplines locally, nationally and internationally.

One of our consultant surgeons is awarded by the Department of Health as a National Clinician Scientist with strong basic science research portfolio for pancreatic cancer.

Research laboratories are based in the Barts Cancer Institute and the first Cancer Research UK’s Clinical Cancer Centre at Charterhouse Square (close to Barts Hospital), with state-of-the-art facilities. Close collaborations on various projects on all aspects of HPB tumours take place with biomedical scientists and oncologists to generate better understanding of the tumour biology and generate new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.

All our consultant surgeons have registered post-graduate students pursuing higher degrees.

We also have representation on local higher surgical training boards, Royal College of Surgeons examiner’s panel as well as national and international specialist societies.

Barts and the London HPB Centre regularly publishes in peer-reviewed scientific literature on current problems and technical advances in treatments for patients with HPB ailments. Clinical trials regularly take place and patients are invited to participate where appropriate. One such trial is the pancreas 2000 ENSAP trial.
