Over the course of the year, Barts and The London Heart Surgery Centre treats between around 1500 to 1800 patients - including some of the most seriously ill patients in London.
We are based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the City and The London Chest Hospital in Bethnal Green, which both have extensive transport links.
We treat patients with a wide range of heart conditions that require surgery including coronary heart disease and valvular heart disease.
The high number of complex cases we see means that we have some of Britain’s leading specialists in our team and their expertise benefits all of our patients. Our teaching hospital status means that we have a higher ratio of doctors and nurses to patients than non-teaching hospitals, which also helps to deliver the best care for our patients.
Our team of cardiothoracic surgeons have a wealth of experience in treating patients with heart problems and with their expertise, we are consistently ranked top of the league tables for low mortality and morbidity figures of all cardiac surgery services within the UK.
Our surgeons perform a range of advanced surgical procedures and have access to new imaging facilities to ensure our patients get the best possible outcome from their treatment. We use minimally invasive or keyhole surgery for some of our surgical procedures as well as using beating heart surgery.
Our imaging department has the full range of diagnostic equipment including a state-of-the-art CT scanner and a new MRI machine, allowing our surgeons to make accurate diagnoses and plan surgical strategy.
As a large teaching and specialist hospital we conduct a wide variety of medical research to ensure that we provide the most advanced and successful treatments for our patients. Working closely with Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, our team of clinicians and scientists are at the forefront of research – investigating new therapies and novel approaches for the diagnosis, classification and treatment of heart conditions.
We ensure that patients and their carers are kept fully informed at each stage of their care. We also work closely with our local healthcare partners ensuring that care continues after our patients leave hospital.
