We run a number of combined clinics with consultants from other specialties. For example:
These combined clinics help cater to the specific needs of patients with inherited bleeding disorders and thereby reduce hospital visits and improve communication.
Physiotherapy
Barts and The London Haemophilia Centre provide a specialist physiotherapy service, dedicated to working with people with haemophilia. Physiotherapists are experts in body movement, we understand how muscles and joints work and why bleeds and injuries can occur. Following a bleed, we will work with you to develop an effective treatment plan. This takes into account your lifestyle, leisure activities and general health and helps restore your movement and function as much as possible.
You will see a physiotherapist during regular visits to the haemophilia clinics. We will encourage you to live an active lifestyle and participate in appropriate sport and physical activities - regular exercise is particularly good for those with haemophilia. We will advise about your need for sufficient rehabilitation before returning to sport and remind you that keeping your joints and muscles healthy is mainly your responsibility. We may also devise an exercise plan for you - but it is up to you to do the work!
Dental services
We work closely with our dental colleagues in the adjacent Royal London Hospital Dental Institute. There are dental consultants with expertise in restorative dentistry and oral surgery with long standing and on-going interest in patients with bleeding disorders.
Simple dental hygiene can be performed by local dentists. We will provide you with a co-authored “dental liaison” letter from the haemophilia and dental teams to tell your local dentist what is safe to do and how to refer to the specialists at The Dental Institute for any more complicated work. If you have very acute problems, particularly severe dental pain, we have access to an out-of-hours emergency dental service.
