Specialist services | Clinical nurse specialists
The Barts Gynaecological Cancer Centre team includes three clinical nurse specialists (CNS) who follow the patient journey from diagnosis and treatment through to supportive care and survivorship (living with, or after cancer).
Clinical nurse specialists are expert senior nurses with great expertise in gynaecological cancer and its treatments. They are available for women and their families to help them understand and cope with a new or recurrent cancer diagnosis and prepare them for forthcoming investigations and treatment. Our nurse specialists can provide written and verbal information, advice and support during patients’ time in hospital or during their clinic appointments. They also provide contact via telephone or email when at home.
Our nurse specialists are also 'patient keyworkers', this means they act as a link with all the different people involved in patient care; they are part of a multidisciplinary team who share expertise to plan and organise treatment. They can often put forward or advocate patient wishes or concerns to the medical or surgical teams on your behalf. Our nurse specialists also have strong links with other healthcare professionals and, after assessment, can refer to other specialists in the hospital or in a patients’ local area for further information, advice or support.
Our clinical nurse specialists also run a health and wellbeing service after cancer treatment in which they provide information, advice and support on healthy living after cancer treatment. In addition their specialist areas of support include quality of life issues such as the emotional or social effects of cancer as well as physical issues such as the menopause, sexual dysfunction or lymphoedema (limb swelling). These issues are also sometimes known as 'survivorship issues'.
The clinical nurse specialist service is open Monday to Friday between 9am-5pm and each CNS may work different hours. Their contact details are below.

There are four hospitals (Newham, Whipps Cross, Homerton and Queens Hospital) in the North East London Cancer Network (NELCN) that refer patients to the Barts Gynaecological Cancer Centre for treatment and follow up for cancer, or possible cancer. Each of these hospitals has a local Clinical Nurse Specialist that provides information and support during the initial diagnosis at the referring hospital and assists with the transfer of care to the Barts Cancer Centre. Once care has been transferred to Barts, the patients and their families will usually be linked to the Barts based Clinical Nurse Specialist team.
