If you are visiting the hospital for an outpatient appointment, this page provides details of what to expect. Please note that your appointment letter will indicate which department to come to.
Women’s outpatients
Our women’s outpatient department is located on the second floor of the outpatient annexe at Barts and is open between 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays.
The surgical gynaecological cancer clinics are held within our department (except the Wednesday clinic which is held on the 1st Floor of West Wing at Barts) and these are led by a team of consultant gynaecological cancer surgeons and Senior Sister Deborah Butcher. The clinics are held on a Monday afternoon, Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning.
During your appointment you will be seen by the consultant, senior registrar or senior house officer. You may also be seen by a specialist nurse at this time. We also run additional specialist clinics at Women's Outpatients including colposcopy, hormone replacement therapy and infertility.
Medical oncology
Clinical oncology
Clinical oncology is located in the medical outpatient department, on the first floor of the Outpatient Annexe. The clinical oncology clinics are held within this department on a Thursday afternoon and are led by a medical consultant and specialist registrars. The clinic cares for women who have received or require radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy to treat their gynaecological cancer. Once women are actually receiving treatment, they will be reviewed weekly in the radiotherapy department. What to expect during your appointment
When you arrive in the department, please report to the reception area where a member of staff will confirm your details, book you in and ask you to take a seat in the waiting area. Please use this opportunity to check and update your personal and GP details. We collect ethnicity information as well for statistical purposes. You don’t have to give this if you don’t wish to.
The clinic nurses or a member of team will let you know when the doctor is ready to see you. The outpatient clinic is often busy and we try our best to see patients within thirty minutes of appointment time. The receptionist and nurses are able to keep you informed of any delay to your appointment time.
During your appointment you are likely to be seen by a variety of members of the team including doctors, specialist nurses and clinic nurses. Our hospitals are involved in teaching both medical and nursing students and therefore students may be present during your clinic appointment. You will be introduced to all staff involved in your care and we will ask your permission for students to be present.
During your consultation with the doctor you may require an internal examination. If this is requested a nurse chaperone will be present with you throughout the examination and you can request a female doctor if preferred. Pre-admission service
If you are coming into hospital for an operation it is important for you to attend a pre-admission appointment.
The pre-admission clinics are held on a Monday and Tuesday morning and enables a full assessment of your medical and social history and gives you the opportunity to ask questions regarding your planned procedure.
Please keep the morning of your pre-admission appointment free as you will normally be required to undertake various pre-operative investigations following your appointment.

Colposcopy
Colposcopy clinics are held daily in the women’s outpatient department, second floor, main outpatient building at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. Women are seen in this clinic when they have been referred by their GP or hospital doctor with an abnormal cervical smear result or are experiencing bleeding after intercourse.
You will be seen and assessed by a Consultant Gynaecologist or our Nurse Colposcopist, Anna Parberry. A nurse colposcopist is a nurse who has completed specialist training in colposcopy and has the skill to carry out a colposcopy examination and biopsy, if needed.
A colposcopy is a simple examination that allows the doctor or nurse to see the type and area of abnormality on your cervix. It also lets them decide if treatment is required.
