Glaucoma service

Patients who are referred with suspected chronic glaucoma are assessed and managed in our outpatient clinics at either Barts or The Royal London Hospitals.

At your first appointment you will see various members of the team who will undertake a number of tests to diagnose and plan the management of your condition.

In addition to the regular eye examination all patients will have a visual field test, a measurement of the thickness of the cornea and an assessment of the drainage function inside the eye.

After all of these are completed your doctor will discuss how he/she will manage your condition.

Most patients diagnosed with glaucoma are prescribed eye drops. The eye drops lower the pressure inside your eye, thus minimising the progression of the disease.

Occasionally drops alone cannot manage glaucoma, and your doctor may suggest laser or surgery to treat the condition.

Patients with glaucoma need regular follow-ups in our outpatient clinic. A visual field test will be carried out to ensure your peripheral vision is not deteriorating.

Patients who have acute angle closure glaucoma would normally come to us via the A & E department, and would have emergency treatment, which may include laser therapy.
