We are one of only a few centres in the country to offer treatment and care for some rare endocrine conditions, such as cushing’s disease, and as a result we have some of Britain’s leading specialists on our team. As some of our services and facilities are so specialised, general practitioners from all over the UK and across Europe refer patients to our centre.
Our services for adults with endocrine conditions are based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in the City of London, and our services for children with endocrine conditions are based at The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, east London.
Team working approach
As hormonal conditions are often linked to different areas of the body and require expertise from a range of medical disciplines, we are fortunate to be based at one of the country’s leading teaching hospital trusts where we can work closely with colleagues in other specialties. An example of this is our links with our diabetes service, click here to view our dedicated website.
This multidisciplinary approach to patient care, enables us to successfully treat some of the most rare and complex cases.
Specialist services
We are one of the few centres in the country to offer transnasal endoscopic surgery - a technique which allows us a wider view of the pituitary gland and a better ability to reach and treat pituitary tumours without invasive surgery.
Working closely with our colleagues at Barts and The London Centre for Neurosciences, we offer patients with particular conditions a special form of non-invasive radiosurgery – known as gamma knife – which provides an alternative to brain surgery. For more details please click here.
Leading centre for cushing’s disease
We are a leading centre for excellence in cushing's disease and have been responsible for producing the diagnostic protocols that are currently used to treat patients with this rare condition within hospitals throughout the world, (source: Endocrine Reviews 1998). We treat more cases of cushing’s disease in children compared to any other centre in the world, (source: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism 1998, 2001).
Endocrine cancer specialists
Over the course of the year, our centre treats approximates 40–50 new cases of thyroid cancer which represents a 200% increase over the last ten years. Each year we treat between 50–75 new patients with pituitary tumours and 40 new patients who have been diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumours. These types of cancers are rare and require specialist care. To find out more please visit our dedicated website for Barts and The London Cancer Centre.
Research
We have close links with the William Harvey Research Institute at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. Together, with our academic colleagues from the Institute, our consultants are involved in numerous joint clinical research projects - two of which include addressing growth hormone in adolescents and how the skeleton recovers following treatment for cushing’s disease.
