Barts and The London Dental Hospital | For GPs and GDPs | Research and academia
Examples of some of our research initiatives are provided below.
Clinical research for precancerous oral lesions
We operate a multi-disciplinary clinic to review and provide clinical research for precancerous oral lesions. In the past two years we have established a Head and Neck Cancer Research Group within the dental hospital investigating precancerous changes in these patients. This research group crosses several areas including Barts and The London Dental Hospital, the Institute of Cell and Molecular Biology, Institute of Cancer, as well as Engineering and Materials at Queen Mary University London.
Specialist sleep apnoea clinic
Sleep apnoea is a condition when people stop breathing while they are asleep. This is considered to be a health issue if breathing stops for more than 10 seconds and this occurs 10 times every hour. The cause is a lack of muscle tone to keep the airway open. At the dental hospital we have a dedicated sleep apnoea clinic, which is a nationally recognised centre for the use of special splints in patients with sleep-disordered breathing.
Our patients are referred directly from sleep centres and as such, patients with suspected sleep apnoea should be referred to a sleep clinic to establish their diagnosis. If these patients meet our acceptance criteria, they will be offered a customised mandibular advancement splint.
