About us

Barts and The London Cystic Fibrosis Centre for children

About us

Our specialised cystic fibrosis service for children is based at Barts and The London Children’s Hospital at The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.  We care for children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis from diagnosis until transition to adult care at 16-17 years of age.

We provide a regional service that covers north east London and Essex, also patients choose to come to our centre from further afield.  We offer an established shared care programme with paediatric teams at Colchester General Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Harlow and Queens Hospital, Romford.

Warm welcome

We recognise that you can choose where your child has their care for cystic fibrosis. Our specialised service is sensitive to the changing needs of children and adolescents with cystic fibrosis and is here to help and guide you and your child, and to provide the best care to suit your child’s and family’s individual needs.

A leading specialist service

Our core cystic fibrosis team consists of consultants trained in the care of cystic fibrosis patients, clinical nurse specialists, specialist dietitians, specialist physiotherapists and a clinical psychologist.  We also work very closely with a designated social worker, administrative support, hospital school, paediatric pharmacy team, radiology services, play specialists and community colleagues. As a teaching hospital, our respiratory doctors in training assist in the management of patients with cystic fibrosis. We have inpatient cubicles for children on Barclay Ward which is a designated children’s respiratory ward at The Royal London Hospital.  We also have twice weekly consultant led cystic fibrosis outpatient clinics and offer specialist nurse led homecare service which includes for many a home intravenous antibiotic programme.

Using research to develop cutting-edge treatments

Our cystic fibrosis team has a strong commitment to increasing our knowledge and understanding of cystic fibrosis.  This involves auditing and analysing the benefits and risks of current treatments, and where appropriate, being involved in developing new treatments that have a direct benefit to our patients.

As a teaching and specialist hospital, we conduct a variety of medical research trials to ensure that we provide the most advanced and successful treatments for our patients. We work closely with the Lung Research Centre and with Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, as well as having research links with other cystic fibrosis centres across London and the UK through specialist consortiums and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
