At Barts and The London Centre for Sports and Exercise Medicine, we offer services dedicated to treating and caring for patients with diseases, conditions or injuries resulting from sports or exercise.
Our highly trained teams understand that patient care needs to be individualised, taking into account psychological and social needs, alongside the medical treatment.
Our specialist services include:
Multi disciplinary assessment
Our team is unique in the NHS as it has a range of expert clinicians, all specialists in their field who meet regularly to perform joint assessments and formulate agreed management plans for patients with complex injuries and conditions.
Systemic masqueraders of musculoskeletal injury
Often we see patients who have not improved despite treatment elsewhere. There are frequently underlying whole body system reasons for this lack of improvement that this team is particularly adept at detecting and treating.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is provided in a dedicated facility by a team of specialist therapists, with state-of-the-art equipment including hydrotherapy, rehabilitation equipment and isokinetic testing.
Image guided injection
Injection under image guidance allows us to treat areas of the body that are otherwise difficult to reach and to be sure that we target exactly the right structure.
Imaging
We work closely with our colleagues in Barts and The London’s medical imaging team, which has access to the full range of medical imaging and diagnostic services, from routine x-rays, specialist scans including MRI, to interventional procedures.
Exercise-induced leg pain and compartment pressure testing
The department has particular expertise in diagnosing and treating exercise-induced leg pain. This includes access to compartment pressure testing – rarely available in the NHS. This involves putting pressure measurement devices into the muscles of the lower leg using a small needle. The patient then runs or cycles while dynamic measurements of pressure are taken - hence clarifying diagnosis.
