Videotelemetry

A technique called videotelemetry, which uses video cameras and electrodes to monitor patients who suffer from seizures over a two week period, is helping to give a more accurate epilepsy diagnosis to give patients the treatment they need.  The new state-of-the-art videotelemetry unit at Barts and The London Centre for Neurosciences has an excellent success rate in accurately diagnosing patients and signposting them to the right treatment.

Patients come in for a stay of up to two weeks in the unit, during which time they remain in one room and are monitored with electrodes until they have a seizure.  Medical staff are able to supervise their progress from a control room, observing patients by video camera and monitoring electrode recordings.  By watching the patient and analysing the electrical traces when the patient has a seizure, medical staff can diagnose the disorder and decide the best course of action, whether a particular kind of medication, operation or other procedure.
