Our services | Gastroesophageal reflux
This condition occurs when acid travels back up the oesophagus – the pipe that carries food from the throat to the stomach.
Over time, the acid can cause harm as it alters the lining of the pipe and stomach. Sufferers are screened regularly to check for pre-cancer signs. If you have the condition once, it is likely that you'll experience it again.
The condition is fairly common with symptoms including heartburn, chronic chest pain, coughing and ear ache.
Repeated episodes of gastroesophageal reflux can cause the lining of the oesophagus to become inflamed. This is called oesophagitis.
Treatment
Medication is often used to help remove the acidity and ease the symptoms. In more severe cases, surgery might be an option.
Making changes to diet and lifestyle can also help, such as stopping smoking and eating smaller meals.
