Coeliac disease

This condition occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the lining of the gut.

The reaction is brought about by eating gluten – the collective name for a type of protein found in wheat, cereals, rye and barley.

1 in 100 people in the population are diagnosed with coeliac disease.

Diagnosis is usually made by checking small samples from the lining of your gut for abnormalities.  A small tube called an endoscope is passed via your mouth into the small intestine to retrieve the samples.

Treatment involves eating a gluten-free diet. Patients start to feel much better as soon as gluten is removed.
