Supporting diabetes patients

At Barts and The London Centre for Diabetes and Metabolism, we have a team of specialist diabetes nurses within the hospital and based in the community, who offer our patients support when they need to stay in hospital as inpatients, as well as when they visit us for outpatient appointments.

Many nurses have interests in the detailed areas of diabetes management and care, including insulin pumps, inhaled insulin, continuous glucose monitoring service, fast track diabetes support, and education. Most of our nurses are able to prescribe medication and have, or are studying for, a Masters degree in diabetes. This ensures that our patients receive the very best care for their condition.

We have diabetes specialist dietitians to ensure that our patients receive guidance and advice about appropriate diets.

As diabetes can often cause foot problems, we have a team of podiatrists who provide specialist support for diabetic patients with foot problems, Diabetes can also often cause problems with vision, and we therefore ensure that all our patients undergo retinal screening, and this service is provided by staff from Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Supporting obese patients

The obesity service has good links to local exercise schemes. We have strong links to experts in the major co-morbidities related to severe obesity, oedema, heart, kidney and lung problems.
