At Barts and The London Centre for Diabetes and Metabolism, we are committed to providing our referring clinicians with information required to support you in making referrals to the service. We are also dedicated to keeping you informed - through these pages - about new developments to our service.

Referral guidelines

To refer a patient to Barts and The London Centre for Diabetes and Metabolism, please follow the guidelines below and use the Choose and Book system.

Appropriate reasons for referral to the diabetes clinics include:

  • Type 1 diabetes.
  • Poor glycaemic control in patients on maximum oral hypoglycaemic medication, who require insulin.
  • Presence of proteinuria and renal impairment.
  • Painful neuropathy poorly responsive to standard therapy.
  • Uncertain type of diabetes.

  • New/complex patient/diabetic-renal clinics at The Royal London Hospital/Mile End Hospital – Dr T Chowdhury.
  • Acute diabetes clinic at The Royal London – Dr Sarah Frankton. The clinic, in particular, welcomes direct referrals from GPs.
  • Morbid obesity clinic at The Royal London – Dr Simon Coppack.
  • Young adult/adolescent diabetes/pump clinic (CSII)/suspected genetic disorders at The Royal London/Mile End – Prof Graham Hitman.
  • Antenatal clinic and pre-conception counselling at The Royal London – Dr David Peterson.
  • Lipid clinic at The Royal London – Prof Graham Hitman.
  • Obesity clinic at Barts Hospital – Dr Simon Coppack.
  • New /complex/young adult/type 1 evening clinics at Barts Hospital – Dr John Anderson or Prof David Leslie.
