Physiotherapy

The physiotherapy team members are experts in human movement and functioning. We use mostly physical approaches to promote, maintain and restore physical, psychological and social well-being. We work closely with the multi-disciplinary team to minimise the effects of cancer and it’s treatment. We aim to provide a holistic service which meets the needs of both patients and family/care givers. Our main goal is to improve the quality of life of all our patients.

We accept referrals from nurses, doctors, other therapists or patients themselves. Our assessments will identify the main problems you are experiencing and typically, we assess you if you have one or more of the following:

  • Decreased mobility
  • Muscle weakness
  • Loss of joint range of movement
  • Pain
  • Fatigue
  • Respiratory problems e.g. breathlessness, difficulty coughing up sputum.
  • Neurological disorders

We offer a range of treatments to target these problems including gait re-education, graded exercise programmes, breathing exercises and advice on sputum clearance, specialist neurological rehabilitation, pain management (including TENS machines) prescription of walking aids and many more. We recognise that treatments may have to be adapted on a daily basis based on how you are feeling and on what treatments you are receiving in hospital. Importantly, we have close links with community services and other physiotherapy departments should treatment need to be continued in another setting.
