Barts Cancer Centre | For patients | Visiting us for appointments
Most patients will first be seen in our outpatient clinic and will be given an appointment time to see a consultant, although you may not always see the named consultant when you attend. Some patients may require direct admission to the inpatient ward if requiring more immediate treatment.
If you would like a nurse to accompany you in an examination by the doctor, tell the receptionist or doctor when you see them. It can be a good idea to bring along a friend or relative to a consultation for support and also they can help you remember all the information you have been told. Often it helps to bring some written questions with you as a reminder of what you want to ask the doctor, and also remember to bring a list of any medication you are currently taking.
When referred for radiotherapy, you will be seen by a radiotherapy specialist. Most patients need to attend for a planning session before they start their radiotherapy treatment. Some patients may need a mould made of the part of the body where they are having treatment, which can mean a wait between the planning stage and starting treatment. Other patients can be treated with radiotherapy straight away.
