Biography:

Dr Steele trained at St George'sHospital, London and after a period of training in general medicine and intensive care he moved to the RoyalMarsdenHospital in 1994. There he undertook research into lung cancer, brain tumours and childrens leukaemia for which he was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine degree. He completed his oncology training at St Bartholomew's Hospital. He has also been a visiting fellow at HarvardMedicalSchool.

Dr Steele is well known in the UK as a specialist in lung cancer and is internationally recognized for his research into malignant mesothelioma. This was acknowledged in 2004 when he was elected to the Board of Directors of the International Mesothelioma Group based in Chicago. He is also interested in complex and rare tumours and in cancers in the older patient. He has published more than fifty research papers and book chapters and is frequently invited to lecture at academic meetings and patient groups.

Dr Steele has a longstanding commitment to patient advocacy and has successfully lobbied the NHS on the provision of new cancer treatments. He is Chairman of Macmillan Mesothelioma UK, an information service for patients and families affected by asbestos-related cancer.
