Biography:

Dr Matthew Smith MA, MD, MRCP, FRCPath is currently a consultant Haemato-Oncologist based at St Barthomew's Hospital, London. He qualified in medicine from CambridgeUniversity and King’s College, London in 1994. He specialised in Haematology at St Bartholomew’s where he undertook a 3 year research post funded by Cancer Research UK into the genetic changes that occur in AML. Part of this work resulted in the identification of the second genetic cause for familial AML, work that has now been repeated by other centres. His clinical practice covers AML, ALL, MDS and CML as well as bone marrow transplantation. His areas of research interest include familial AML, molecular risk stratification in AML, clinical trials in relapsed acute leukaemia, the long term physical and psychological issues in survivors of leukaemia, causes of early death during therapy for acute leukaemia and the mechanisms behind leukaemic cells moving from their niche in the bone marrow into other tissues such as the skin and cerebrospinal fluid. He also has a strong interest in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.
