Our clinical outcomes
Our stroke services have received national recognition in an independent national audit. Stroke patients at Barts and The London and Tower Hamlets Primary Care Trust receive some of the best care in the country according to the 2006 National Sentinel Audit for Stroke, commissioned by the Royal College of Physicians.
The audit investigated every hospital that provides stroke services in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and rated the key 12 services provided to stroke patients which are vital to maximising the chances of a strong recovery. These services include taking aspirin within 48 hours after a stroke, being assessed by therapists, documenting rehabilitation goals and performing a home visit before discharge.
Across all areas, Barts and The London’s overall performance was awarded a score of 90% – this was 23% higher than the national average score of 67%.
Survival rates and length of stay are among the best in London and our service is seen as a model of how services in east London can be developed.
Fast access
All new patients receive a CT scan immediately after an assessment by a consultant in A&E and are then transferred to Barts and The London Brain Attack Centre for specialist care.
Number of patients treated
Barts and The London Brain Attack Centre, based at The Royal London Hospital, has treated about 1,000 stroke patients since opening in 2002. A specialist rehabilitation service for younger patients (under-60s) who have suffered a stroke was set up in the stroke rehabilitation unit at Mile End Hospital in 2005.
