Bringing Excellence to Life

About us

Barts and The London Brain Attack Centre

About us

One of the leading centres in the UK

Barts and The London Brain Attack Centre is based at The Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel and at Mile End Hospital. Our new hyperacute stroke unit is part of a new national approach to dealing with strokes which involves providing care at specialist stroke centres.

More than 6,000 Londoners suffered a stroke in 2005/06. Nationally, more women die of stroke than they do of breast cancer, and at Barts and The London Brain Attack Centre we also deal with a disproportionately high number of young people who have suffered a stroke.

We treat NHS patients from Tower Hamlets and elsewhere in north and east London who are brought to our local Accident and Emergency department (A&E) at The Royal London Hospital.

The specialist early treatment means that we have one of the best survival rates from stroke in the country. We also have a higher proportion of patients able to leave hospital and go back to their own home than the national average.

Warm welcome

We recognise that patients who have suffered a stroke require very special attention during and after their treatment. Our team of experts is dedicated to helping you through this time and providing the best care to suit your individual needs, and also to providing support and advice to carers.

Leading specialists

Our centre is in the privileged position of being able to use a wide range of expertise, which benefits all our patients. Our leading consultants are supported by a multidisciplinary team consisting of specialist nurses and therapists. In addition, we are able to call on the services of other specialists as required.

All our team are committed to providing the highest possible standards of care.

Using research to develop cutting-edge treatments

As a large teaching and specialist hospital we conduct a wide variety of medical research to ensure that we provide the most advanced and successful treatments for our patients. Working closely with Barts and The London Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, our team of clinicians and scientists are at the forefront of research – investigating new therapies and novel approaches for the treatment of strokes. We are currently carrying out research trials in aspects of acute care and rehabilitation.

Seamless service

We aim to ensure that patients are kept fully informed at each stage of their treatment. Critical to the quality of our service is teamwork; our patients experience a multidisciplinary and seamless approach – receiving medical treatment, high quality nursing care and other support, such as rehabilitation, if required.
