Barts and The London HIV Service | Your outpatient appointment | Specialist pharmacy

Our unit houses a specialist pharmacy team and any medicines that you have been prescribed will be reviewed by our specialist pharmacists based within our unit. The prescription will then be dispensed in our outpatient pharmacy based in the neighbouring building.
The specialist pharmacists and pharmacy team will be happy to give you advice on any aspect of your drug treatment. Home delivery of HIV medications can also be organised by the specialist pharmacist for patients who are stable on treatment.
It is important to make sure you have enough medication until your next appointment. If you do not have enough medicine, please follow these steps:
The specialist pharmacy can only dispense a prescription related to HIV. If you have other health problems unrelated to HIV you will be asked to get treatment for these from your GP.
The specialist pharmacists also provide support and with strategies to help you stick accurately to your treatment and run clinics for stable patients. They can also provide repeat prescriptions of your HIV medications.
Once you have begun HIV treatment, the key to keeping good health is to keep taking your drugs regularly to protect yourself from the virus. It is vital you take your medications and to be prepared to continue taking them. Our nurses and pharmacists will support you with this. HIV patients normally start on a simple regime with a minimum amount of tablets. You will be prescribed a medicine that is right for your HIV status and we will take into account your occupation and social lifestyle.
