Barts and The London HIV Service | Registering with a GP

There is no reason why your life should not remain the same after you have been diagnosed as HIV positive. We are here to provide the right care and treatment to help you live a normal and happy life and our team is here to support you. Your GP is also here to support you and there are lots of reasons why you may wish to tell your GP about your HIV diagnosis.
Initially it may be because you could be unwell at home, and without knowing all your health details, your GP may not be able to accurately diagnose what is wrong with you.
Secondly, your GP may need to prescribe medication for you. It is important that whenever someone prescribes medication they are aware of what you are already taking, that way they can avoid giving you something that may interact with your existing medication and potentially make you feel worse, or even cause your HIV medications to stop working.
Finally, we may find that you have a problem that is unrelated to HIV; such as asthma or high cholesterol. In these situations it is better that your GP manages that part of your health, as your GP is likely to be more experienced in these particular aspects of health care.
Doctors at our centre and your GP can support you in all aspects of managing your HIV condition and your general healthcare needs. Together we are here to support you.
