Barts and The London Heart and Chest Centre

Our performance

With one of the UK’s biggest and most successful cardiac teams, Barts and The London Heart and Chest Centre consistently features among the country’s top performers. The information below provides evidence of our success.

Fast access for heart surgery

  • In the last five years we have treated an average of between 1500-1800 patients a year.
  • The average waiting time for the first outpatient appointment for patients requiring elective cardiac surgery (for planned, non emergency operations) is one of the lowest in the UK - between 2 - 4 weeks.

Survival rates for heart surgery

The number of patients who survive their operation and are successfully discharged is currently 98.4 per cent -well above the national average.

Patient satisfaction

In a recent survey 95 per cent of patients said the care they received was excellent.

Types of procedures performed during 2007

Biventricular devices  115
ICD                         261
Atrial Fibrillation        258
Non AF Ablation        411

Cardiac electrophysiology

We have excellent clinical outcomes and submit the results of all our procedures to the central cardiac audit database so it is available for public scrutiny.

We are a pioneer for catheter ablation in patients with atrial fibrillation - currently performing between 300 to 400 of these procedures annually.

For the last 250 atrial fibrillation cases, 82 per cent of patients have maintained normal heart rhythm and have improved symptoms.
