Clinical link roles provide nurses with the opportunity to develop their skills in areas of interest whilst also contributing to high standards of care.
Excellence has certainly contributed to the development of a constantly evolving and expanding service.
Nurses work across hospital sites between Barts Hospital, in the City of London, and The London Chest Hospital in Bethnal Green, east London.
Our nurse-led clinics include:
Nurse-led discharge has been successfully integrated into the patient pathway.
All nurses within the Heart and Chest Centre are encouraged to participate in multi-disciplinary working. This includes contributing to academic achievements.
Practice development coordinators and clinical educators support all of our clinical areas. They actively help nurses to achieve their full potential as well as meeting the required Knowledge and Skills Framework guidelines.
The department have successfully introduced a cardiac rotation programme. Individualised rotation can be undertaken following negotiation with the practice development nurses.
Critical care at St Bartholomew’s Hospital and The London Chest Hospital comprises of 21 beds on both sites:
The London Chest
The London Chest Hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ITU) cares for patients who have undergone cardiacthoracic surgery, and complex cardiology. Patients are admitted from our hospital's Heart Attack Centre. They are cared for post operatively/procedure using the state-of-the-art equipment, including ventricular assist devices.
Our ITU also provides support for patients in multi-organ failure and respiratory support for the more complex respiratory conditions including patients suffering from cystic fibrosis.
As a highly-focused cardiothoracic centre, we enjoy excellent inter-speciality relationships. We now perform percutaneous aortic valve replacements jointly with cardiologist and cardiothoracic surgeons.
Barts Hospital
At Barts, there is a 13-bedded expanding ITU. The unit is multi-disciplinary and admits patients who have had cardiothoracic surgery. These patients are cared for alongside patients admitted from the cancer centre who require level 2 and level 3 care following complex surgical procedures, e.g head and neck, sepsis, multi organ failure thus requiring organ support. The unit will provide non-invasive ventilation where needed.
Both ITUs are supported by 2 adjacent high dependency units (HDU). The cardiothoracic HDU is where patients progress to following their ITU admission. Patients may still require a high level of support and this may take the form of non-invasive ventilation and inotropes. From HDU, patients will be transferred to the wards.
Education and research
There is an active teaching and training programme for junior medical and nursing staff and a specific staff development programme has been established to encourage nurse recruitment and retention.
The cardiac department runs a successful rotation to the cardiac and cancer wards.

We have several dedicated adult critical care consultants and a professor of intensive care medicine.
