Accident and Emergency

The Accident and Emergency service (A&E) is run from The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel. This is a level one trauma centre and operates the London's Air Ambulance from a helipad on the roof of the 17th floor of the new The Royal London Hospital. It also has a dedicated children’s A&E Department and there is a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at Barts.

The department is unique within London and the UK in its provision of a resident A&E Consultant available 24 hours per day, Monday to Friday.

Services provided by Accident and Emergency:
• A 24-hour, seven day a week comprehensive emergency service is provided including senior accident and emergency staff, triage, nurse practitioners, trauma team, CT scanning, cardiac arrest team, decontamination facilities and specialist opinion from all major specialities.
• A 24-hour dedicated children’s Accident and Emergency service.
• Major incident response plan including the provision of trained, mobile teams and a rota of trained medical incident officers.

London's Air Ambulance service carries a senior doctor and a paramedic to the scene of serious accidents. The helicopter operates seven days a week in daylight hours. In addition there is a fast response car for use when the helicopter cannot fly or is unavailable.

Physicians Response Unit (PRU) runs from the A&E Department responding to medical emergencies in East London and the City. A senior A&E doctor and paramedic are sent to category A emergencies including chest pain, seizures, patients who have collapsed or are unconscious and some minor trauma cases. The service operates Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.

The Tower Hamlets Doctors on Call (THEDOC) out-of-hours GP co-operative is also based in the A&E Department.

The Urgent Care Centre is part of the Accident and Emergency Department. Open seven days a week, 12noon -10pm, the centre will see patients with minor injuries and illnesses, after assessment within A&E. This assessment will be by a GP, Emergency Nurse Practitioner, or hospital doctor. Prior to this, patients will be assessed to see whether their care is more appropriately provided by their local GP.

Physiotherapy and dressing clinic services previously provided by the Whitechapel Walk-in Centre, will be provided through the Trust’s community health services.

The GP out of hours service will also be based in the Urgent Care Centre and will be by appointment only. After liaising with the relevant on-call team, local GPs and out of hours doctors can direct patients to the Acute Admissions Unit (formerly the Medical Admissions Unit), the Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) and the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU).

The Whitechapel walk-in centre has now closed. For all accidents and emergencies requiring urgent care, please go to A&E in the new hospital. Alternatively, other community walk-in clinics are available at:
