Spinal surgery

Our leading specialists have experience of surgically treating a range of spinal conditions, including chronic degenerative conditions (such as arthritis), traumatic injuries, spinal infections (including tuberculosis), spinal metastases (secondary cancer) and spinal deformities.

We offer a specialist spinal surgery service, as our surgeons have expertise in operating on all parts of the spine; we undertake surgery affecting the cervical (neck) region, through to the lumber (lower back) region. This includes surgical replacements or fusions of discs.

Only spinal tuberculosis (TB) multidisciplinary clinic in the UK
Our hospitals see more than 250 cases of tuberculosis a year, including up to 20 patients with spinal TB, where the TB infection affects the spine.  In these cases, patients attend only one clinic for their assessments rather than two.

The clinic combines the expertise of two spinal orthopaedic surgeons, a respiratory doctor with a special interest in TB and a specialist TB nurse.  Patients referred to the clinic are either inpatients or patients referred from other hospitals.

Our research into and experience of treating spinal TB has already added to the worldwide body of information on the treatment of the disease.  More recently, one of our orthopaedic fellows presented research data from our clinic to an international meeting.  The findings were also published in the national Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.

‘The joint spinal TB clinic ensures patients get the opinions of the whole team in a single visit.’  Spinal orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Colin Natali.
