Research

New technologies and treatments

Barts and The London Orthopaedic Centre is committed to researching new technologies and treatments for patients. We have close working relationships with our research and academic colleagues at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry (QMUL), in particular in the areas of biomedical engineering and medical engineering. These areas have an international reputation in the research of innovative implants used in orthopaedics.

The Freeman hip and knee replacement procedure was developed at our centre in the 1980s, and this is now used around the world. Our experts are continuing research on this to improve the implant further.

Research into the mechanical properties of Ilizarov Frames is being undertaken in partnership with the departments of biomedical engineering and medical engineering at Queen Mary University of London. The results of this research have been published in peer reviewed journals.
