Barts and The London Orthopaedic Centre
We treat patients with chronic degenerative conditions (such as arthritis) or who have sustained soft tissue or bone injuries to the hip, thigh, knee, lower leg, ankle and foot.
Our joint replacement service offers routine treatments such as total hip replacements (arthroplasty), knee replacements, surface hip and knee replacements and we are also specialists in our field for joint revision surgery (i.e. where a previous joint replacement has not been successful).
The Freeman hip and knee replacements were developed at our centre in the 1980s and these are now used around the world.
We have specialist expertise in treating soft tissue damage of the knee, including the anterior cruciate ligament. This is the main stabilising ligament of the knee and is commonly damaged in sports injuries - especially in football players - and can occur when a player makes a sudden change of direction or stops running. The surgical treatment of a damaged anterior cruciate ligament can involve reconstruction of the ligament using a tendon from another part of the knee.
