Bringing Excellence to Life

About us

Barts and The London Orthopaedic Centre is based at the renowned Royal London Hospital in vibrant Whitechapel, East London. Home to London’s Air Ambulance (also known as the Helicopter Emergency Medical Services or HEMS), our specialists treat more complex trauma cases than any other centre in the UK, and as such we have a wide range of specialist orthopaedic expertise that benefits all of our patients.

Leading specialists

Our team is highly specialised in every aspect of orthopaedic health - from routine hip and knee replacements to more complex, delicate spinal surgery and traumatic injuries.  The Freeman hip and knee replacement procedure was developed at our centre in the 1980s, and this is now used around the world.

Being part of Barts and The London hospitals, we work very closely with colleagues in other teams to ensure you receive a seamless and combined approach to your treatment. These include our Rheumatology Centre, Cancer Centre, Children’s Hospital, Trauma Centre, physiotherapy and care of the elderly teams. We also ensure that you have access to support services when you leave hospital, allowing you to rehabilitate and improve your quality of life.

Whatever your age, you can be assured that you are being cared for by some of the country’s leading orthopaedic surgeons.

Using research to develop cutting-edge treatments

As a large teaching and specialist hospital we conduct a variety of medical research to ensure that we provide the most advanced and successful treatments for our patients. Working closely with Barts and The London, School of Medicine and Dentistry, we are investigating new therapies and novel approaches for the diagnosis, classification and treatment of orthopaedic conditions.
